Enduro 2 : Merriman enjoys winning Enduro 2 debut
Round: 1 - Spanish GP
Circuit: Guadalajara
Date: 2 April 2005

UFO Corse Yamaha rider Stefan Merriman claimed two day wins in the Enduro 2
class at the opening round of the FIM World Enduro Championship in
Guadalajara, Spain to take an early lead in the highly competitive E2 class.
Finishing ahead of Frenchman Fabien Planet on day one and Finn Samuli Aro on
day two, Merriman now heads the E2 class of the nine-round championship
aboard his WR450F.

With Planet claiming the runner-up position on day one it was Aro who
finished third with neither rider able to mount a serious challenge to the
Australian. With Merriman again comfortably out front in the E2 class on day
two, Aro managed to get the closest to the reigning E1 world champion but
was again unable to challenge for the day win. Finishing third on day two
was Swede Anders Eriksson aboard his Husqvarna.

Stefan Merriman (UFO Corse Yamaha) Day 1: First, Day 2: First

“It’s always good to start the new season with a win and all things
considered I’m really happy with the way things went here in Spain. Day one
was pretty tough, but it was like that for everyone. The weather changed a
lot and the course also changed very fast, which meant that some of the
riders at the rear of the class entry were able to go fast. I was a little
nervous before the race because I didn’t have great results in the opening
rounds of the Italian championship but everything has worked out really
well.

“The team is using Ohlins suspension for the first time this season and like
all changes it takes some time to get used to the way the bike works. We’ve
been working really hard and the bike is really good. “I crashed once on the
extreme test on day two, which I was pretty angry with myself for because it
was a stupid mistake, but that was the only real mistake. I hurt my finger,
which made it hard to use the clutch. Thankfully that was the worst thing
that happened to me all weekend and everything else went good.”

David Fretigne (Yamaha France) Day 1: 10th, Day 2: Ninth

“It was a really difficult race for me because since the Dakar Ralley I have
only spent a little bit of time on an enduro bike. I am competing for fun. I
am really surprised at the level of the riders because it is very close
between so many competitors. It was my first time riding an extreme special
test but I really enjoyed it. They are very interesting and challenging for
the riders.
“I had a crash on the first special test on day two which didn’t help my
result. The rest of the race went ok but it is difficult for me to return to
enduro after racing in the Dakar.”

Enduro 1 : Difficult start of season for Oblucki
Round: 1 - Spanish GP
Circuit: Guadalajara
Date: 2 April 2005

UFO Corse Yamaha team rider Bartosz Oblucki did not get the season start he
was hoping for, just missing the podium on dat one and finishing ninth on
day 2. Local favourite Ivan Cervantes (KTM) claimed a double class win after
producing consistently quick special test times all weekend despite not
known for his mud riding skills. Behind Cervantes on day one Frenchman Marc
Germain defended Yamaha’s honor well by claiming a well deserved runner-up
spot finishing ahead of Britain’s Paul Edmondson making an all four-stroke
podium. On day two Cervantes was followed home by Swede Richard Larsson with
Finn Petteri Silvan finishing third.

Bartosz Oblucki (UFO Corse Yamaha) Day 1:Fourth, Day 2: Ninth
“Day one wasn’t so bad for me because I finished fourth, only one second
behind third place. I lost 11 seconds on the final special test of the day
because I crashed on the road, which was a big crash and I was lucky not to
hurt myself.

“Day two was really bad but I don’t know the reason why. I felt bad and my
times in the special test were also bad. I couldn’t find a good rhythm. I
onlky had two tests where my times were good. Then I crashed and things just
didn’t go so well. All in all it was a pretty disappointing weekend for me.”

JAMES STEWART AGAIN FEATURED IN SPORTS ILLUSTRATED MAGAZINE

Supercross Friday 8 April 2005

The April 11 issue of Sports Illustrated magazine features a full page article about James Stewart. Penned by Yi-Wyn Yen, this is the second story about Bubba to appear in the venerable sports magazine in recent months, proving how the mainstream media is providing more coverage of motorcycle racing.

The well written story highlights Bubba’s rise through the ranks of AMA racing including his dominating victory last weekend at the Dallas Supercross – his first in the 250 class. The story also predicts how Bubba is “destined to change the face of Supercross”.

A sidebar to the story sizes up Bubba’s primary competition including Ricky Carmichael, Chad Reed, Kevin Windham, Jeremy McGrath and Travis Pastrana. The issue is on newsstands now.

HANSEN AND GRANT PENALIZED

Supercross Friday 8 April 2005

PICKERINGTON, Ohio (April 8, 2005) — AMA Pro Racing has announced that Josh Hansen and Josh Grant have been penalized for actions at round 12 of the THQ AMA Supercross Series at Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas on April 2.

In announcing the penalties, AMA Pro Racing SX/MX Series Manager Steve Whitelock stated Hansen has been fined $5000 and Grant has been fined $2000. Additionally, both riders have been placed on probation for the remainder of the 2005 racing season and further inappropriate behavior could result in a suspension of their AMA professional racing licenses.

“At Dallas, both riders engaged in actions that are detrimental to the sport of motorcycle racing,” said Whitelock in announcing the penalties. “An on-track incident spilled over to additional altercations off of the track and that is completely unacceptable.”

Both riders were made aware of their penalties Friday morning in a meeting at the Pontiac Supercross.

NEXT EVENT: SILVERDOME, PONTIAC, MICHIGAN – APRIL 9, 2005

STEWART LOOKS TO BE RIDER TO BEAT AT PONTIAC SUPERCROSS

Supercross Tuesday 5 April 2005

AMA 125 East Supercross title also to be decided

PICKERINGTON, Ohio (April 5, 2005) — After dominating in his first THQ AMA Supercross Series win last weekend in Dallas, Kawasaki‚Äôs James ‚ÄúBubba‚Äù Stewart is considered by many the favorite to win this weekend‚Äôs race on Saturday, April 9, at the Silverdome in the Detroit suburb of Pontiac, Mich. Attention will also shine brightly on the series finale of the AMA 125 East Supercross Series.

Three riders still have a shot at the 125 East title with Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Grant Langston leading Red Bull KTM’s Josh Hansen by seven points. Suzuki’s young gun Davi Millsaps is in contention for the title as well, just 10 points behind Langston.

Langston is one of the most versatile riders in AMA racing. The South African native already has a 125 Motocross World Championship, an AMA 125 Motocross Championship and an AMA Supermoto Unlimited title to his credit. He’s now looking to add an AMA 125 Supercross title to his collection. He went a long way in securing the title by winning last weekend at Texas Stadium.

The Championship was close so I definitely wanted and needed the win in Dallas,” Langston said. “The win gives me a little bit of a margin. I’ll sleep a little better this week, but I know I still have to put in a good performance at Pontiac. Being with the new team and being able to practice with all of Kawasaki’s riders really helped motivate me this year.”

Josh Hansen and Davi Millsaps now need a little luck on their side to have a chance to catch Langston for the 125 East Championship. If Hansen can pull it off he will join his dad Donnie Hansen as the first father and son combo to win AMA Supercross titles. Millsaps is in his first full season of Supercross and the 17-year-old from Georgia said he’s been happy with his performance this season. “I’ll go into Pontiac and ride my own race,” he said. “I’ve had a successful season regardless of what happens there.”

While the 125 East title will be decided in Pontiac, four rounds still remain in the premier class. Three-time AMA Supercross Champion Ricky Carmichael comes into the race with a 31-point lead over defending champ and two-time Pontiac Supercross winner Chad Reed. Carmichael is hoping to get his first win at Pontiac since 2001 and give Suzuki its first victory at the event since 1983, but he remains focused on the big prize of his fourth AMA Supercross title.

“It’s been frustrating to dominate the first half of the season and not be able to do it now,” Carmichael admitted. “With the points lead I have to watch my back and not put myself in a position to have something bad happen. I want to run with Bubba and get some more wins, but I’m sort of in a tough position right now in my run for the title.”

Reed’s winning streak came to an end with a crash at Dallas last week. He managed to regroup and put his Yamaha on the podium with a third, but he lost ground in his charge to catch Carmichael in the standings. “At Dallas I came up on a lapped rider and hit his back tire,” he said. “It was unfortunate, but those things happen. Now I have to get ready for Pontiac.”

With Carmichael and Reed still in a championship battle the emergence of Bubba Stewart has opened a new chapter in the 2005 AMA Supercross season. Stewart became the first new winner of the series in over two years. And the buildup of the expectations for the all-time winningest 125 rider put intense pressure on him to win.
“Everybody has been expecting a lot from me and I’m just so happy it (winning a 250 main) finally happened,” Stewart said. “It took me three races to get my first win. For some reason I knew I was going to do it in Dallas. I felt really strong last weekend. I’ve got one under my belt. The pressure is off now and it’s time to race.”

Stewart sat out most of the first half of the season with a broken arm so he’s not in the championship hunt. He admits that enables him to focus solely on winning, not needing to worry about the points chase.

“I’m looking forward to Pontiac,” he said. “I won the 125 race there last year and I’d like to go there and win the big race.”

Demaria victim of ill fortune in MX3 opener

Motocross Sunday 3 April 2005

Today in Castelnau de Levis, France, defending MX3 World Champion Yves Demaria finished runner-up in the first moto and was leading the second race until a rear wheel problem forced his retirement, giving an eighth place finish overall.

It was an eventful day for the Jacky Martens-led team. Demaria made several mistakes and had to rise from twentieth position to earn second in the first MX3 outing of the season. He was then foiled by bad luck later in the afternoon as countryman Julien Vanni claimed the overall victory.

Sven Breugelmans was leading Moto1 from Marco Dorsch until his chain broke. The Belgian then took fourth in the later sprint. Julien Bill had been
fighting against illness all weekend. Registering a temperature of almost 40 degrees the youngster collided with Andrea Bartolini and DNF-ed. He then finished fifth behind his team-mate in Moto2.
