Dunlop congratulates Davi Millsaps, AMA Supercross Lites East Champion

Press Release Issued By Dunlop Motorcycle Tires Press (April 4, 2006)

Buffalo, NY – Dunlop Motorcycle Tires is proud to congratulate Honda Racing’s Davi Millsaps, who wrapped up the 2006 AMA Supercross Lites East Championship with a resounding victory at the final event at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas on Saturday, April 1.

For the 18-year old from Cairo, Georgia, it is his first professional AMA title. Millsaps entered the final round of Eastern Division Lites competition with the series’ points lead and needed to finish 17th or better to win the championship. But Millsaps was not going to sit back in this race. Instead, the youngster charged into the lead on the third lap. In characteristic fashion, he never let up and took the checkered flag with a comfortable 3.676-second lead.

“I just want to thank American Honda for backing me up on this one, and Dunlop Tires…” said Millsaps. “I want to thank all the fans, my mom, my mechanic Carlos… everyone out there that got me this number one plate, thank you!” Of his chances to repeat as the East/West Supercross Shoot Out Champion in Las Vegas on May 6, he said, “I’m hoping to make it on top this season again, hopefully the East coast sweeps it.” Millsaps is anxious to throw a leg over the CRF450R and finish out the season competing in the marquis Supercross class. Then it’s on to the Motocross Lites outdoor season slated to begin on May 21 in Sacramento at the Hangtown Motocross Classic.

Kawasaki Racing Team is Victorious in Houston

Press Release Issued By Kawasaki Media Relations (March 31, 2006)

HOUSTON (April 1, 2006) - It is obvious that Houston has been very good to Kawasaki Racing Team rider James Stewart. The 20-year-old Floridian successfully defended his Supercross title at Reliant Stadium before a crowd of 47,389 fans Saturday night and became the first rider since Ricky Carmichael in 2002 to win back-to-back races in Houston. The win also tied Stewart with Carmichael for the Amp’d Mobile World Supercross GP championship. Team Monster/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider Chris Gosselaar captured third-place in the Supercross Lites main event, and in doing so, finished second-place overall in the series.

Stewart began the evening by remaining undefeated in heat races this season. Stewart’s teammate, Michael Byrne, got the holeshot to start the eight-lap qualifier but Stewart moved into the lead on lap three and gained a substantial lead over the field before taking the checkered flag. Byrne got crossed-up in the whoops on lap six and went down. As a result, he was forced to race in the semi-qualifier where he took the lead straight out of the gate and punched his ticket to the main event with a win.

In the main event, Byrne launched his KX450F out of the gate to take his second holeshot of the evening before Stewart moved by him only three turns later and pulled away from the field. Stewart was so dominant aboard his KX450F that he had a six-second gap on the field by the second lap and maintained his lead throughout the 20-lap feature while Byrne rounded out the top five.

“I’m having a blast out there,” said Stewart. “I’m pumped to tie-up the points for the world championship, and if I want to have a shot at winning the AMA championship, I need to win races. My Kawasaki ran great and I had a great pace out there tonight, so this win feels good.”

In Supercross Lites action, Team Monster/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Chris Gosselaar posted another consistent performance in the main event to finish on the podium. Gosselaar started the 15-lap feature in fifth before moving into third-place after four laps where he held his position until the checkered flag. Teddy Maier finished eighth while his Richmond Kawasaki teammate Donnie Mcgourty finished 19th.

The Amp’d Mobile World Supercross GP / Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series takes a two-week hiatus before heading to Texas Stadium in Dallas, April 22nd for the 14th stop on the 18-race series.

Signs of Life
Moto XXX Results Improve in Detroit’s Ford Field Supercross

Team Unbound Energy/Moto XXX entered Detroit’s Ford Field last weekend with the
level of excitement and anticipation you’d expect for a new venue’s debut race.
The riders were excited to see the facilities, track design and dirt. The team
as a whole was concerned with the tasks of keeping Timmy Ferry in the top ten
and getting Josh Summey back there. In addition to a couple of other positive
developments, those objectives were met.

Leading the way, as he has been for past couple of months, was Timmy Ferry.
“Red
Dog” has gone on a tear of late, finishing in the top ten week after week.
While
running at the front of the privateer pack, he’s also had successful battles
with factory riders. His 9th place finish in Detroit saw him retain 10th place
in the season standings. As long as he continues his current pace, Ferry should
be able to move up a couple more spots before the series comes to a close in
Las
Vegas.

Since the Supercross series shifted to the East, Josh Summey has consistently
displayed top ten, even top five speed at times. Unfortunately, bad luck has
caused problems with his consistency. Untimely crashes, such as the one that
ended his main event in the first turn at Orlando, have been all too common,
but “Sum Dog” got it going in Detroit. After squeaking into the “Lites” class
main event via the LCQ, he set his sites on the sport’s brightest young stars.
Proving that he should be considered one of them, Summey diced with the factory
boys and rode a smart race in general. He finished 8th and got himself back up
to 13th in the standings. With one more round in the East region, his goal is
to finish as strongly as possible and make one last move in the standings.

Detroit also saw the return of Kyle Lewis, who was injured a few weeks ago. On
doctor’s orders, “Lucky” sat a few rounds out because of facial injuries that
could have jeopardized his vision if not allowed to heal properly. In Detroit,
he was able to find a pretty good pace, but crashes in his qualifiers kept him
out of the main event. Nevertheless, it was great to have him back at the track
and even with all the setbacks, he still holds 20th in the standings.

Next up for Team Unbound Energy/Moto XXX is the Houston Supercross, which will
be followed by a much-needed pair of weekends off.

Stewart Heats Up Houston with Two-Race Win Streak

Press Release Issued By Supercross Media (March 28, 2006)

AURORA, Ill. (March 28, 2006) – Kawasaki’s James Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., brings a two-race win streak into Houston’s Reliant Stadium this Saturday, April 1 for the Amp’d Mobile World Supercross GP/Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series. Reliant Stadium is the birthplace of Stewart’s first AMA Supercross class win, which took place last year. While Suzuki’s Ricky Carmichael has a comfortable points lead for the Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series, the race for the Amp’d Mobile World Supercross GP is heating up.

Stewart, who has seven wins on the season, started his win streak in Orlando where he led all 20-laps in the main event. Before 41,010 fans last weekend, the 20-year-old superstar repeated that performance at the inaugural race inside Detroit’s Ford Field. The two wins positioned Stewart to tie Carmichael for the Amp’d Mobile World Supercross GP this weekend in Houston.

Stewart trails reigning World Supercross GP/AMA Supercross Series champion Carmichael, of Tallahassee, Fla., by three points in Amp’d Mobile World supercross GP standings and 20 points in the Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series.

Yamaha’s Chad Reed sits in second place, 10 points behind Carmichael in the AMA Supercross class but is struggling due to a shoulder separation suffered before the stop at Daytona International Speedway. The tough Australian has ridden through the pain earning podium finishes at two of the three races since the injury.

“Everyday, I do what I need to do to get my shoulder strong,” said Reed of the injured shoulder. “I’ve just accepted the fact that it’s an injury that’ll be here a while and I just gotta do my part by keeping strong and giving it everything I got. Never give up and fight ‘til the end.

“It’s my problem. Obviously, I know I can ride better without a shoulder injury but it is what it is. I feel I’m giving up some on the track and that sucks but I’m figuring out how to ride my race with my situation.”

Stewart turned a blazing fast 48.8 lap time in the main event and established a decent lead in his race against the clock.

“I just wanted to ride and put twenty consistent laps together,” said Stewart. “The track changed a lot and all I could do was to try and stay up. I saw Ricky (Carmichael) coming up through the pack and I saw Chad (Reed) pushing hard too. I knew those two were going to start battling because they are so close for the AMA Supercross points race. I just want to win races,” said Stewart. “I figure if I win races, I’ll come out close to winning the (Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series) title. I’m just going out there and doing my own thing and getting good (lap) times. “

This season a consistent Carmichael has been on the podium 14 out of 15 races and has won six races.

“I’m worried about myself, not anybody else,” said Carmichael. “I have my goals and I’m not worried about anyone. I need to take care of myself before I worry about someone else.”

In the AMA Supercross Lites class, Honda’s Davi Millsaps, of Cairo, Ga., leads his Honda teammate Josh Grant, of Riverside, Calif., by 22 points heading into the final race of the Eastern regional AMA Supercross Lites championship. Grant could give Honda their first lites title since 1993 when Doug Henry won the championship. Last weekend Grant’s win in Detroit marked Honda’s seventh consecutive lites win, a feat that hasn’t been done since 1993 as well.

The rich history of supercross in Houston dates back to March 15, 1974 when Jim Pomeroy won the 250cc main event aboard a Yamaha. Since 1974, the city of Houston has been on the AMA Supercross schedule and in seven of those years, the Houston Astrodome hosted two races.

In front of 43,445 fans last year, Carmichael clinched his fourth AMA Supercross Series championship and his 12th AMA National Title. Honda’s Andrew Short, of Murrieta, Calif., won his first 125cc Western Regional AMA Supercross Series race, leading all 15 laps in the main event.

Tickets are available at the Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets, all participating Yamaha dealers (tickets also available at Yamaha outlets), or charge by phone at 713-629-3700.

This weekend’s race will air on SPEED on Sunday, April 2, 2006 at 6:00 p.m. EST. A tape-delayed, one-hour television broadcast of the AMA Supercross Lites racing will air on SPEED on Sunday, April 9, at 6 p.m. EST.

Hurley Takes 1st Win on RM-Z450

Press Release Issued By Team Suzuki Press Office – March 27, 2006

Team Shift Motul Suzuki’s Daryl Hurley won the second round of the Australian Supercross Masters at Perth’s Claremont Showground at the weekend.

Newly-mounted on the RM-Z450 machine, Hurley scored its first four-stroke victory in the Pro Open class of the 2006 Supercross Masters.

Hurley’s team-mate, Luke Burkhart (pictured) was also impressive on the RM-Z450, but was given a controversial penalty for riding outside a track marker that cost the team its first-ever one-two finish in the Championship.

Burkhart’s penalty also cost him vital points and dropped him from second place to fourth in the series.

Kiwi’s Hurley and Burkhart finished the evening’s three motos in fourth and eighth, fifth and second, and first and fourth respectively. However, due to the penalty applied in race two, Burkhart was awarded third place in the second moto.

The Supercross Masters Series now makes way for the Australian Motocross Championship which kicks of in Perth next weekend (Sunday 2 April).

Said Hurley: “It was great to take the win on the RM-Z450 and get some good points on the board.

“I made a few mistakes early in the night. I wasn’t really comfortable on the bike to start with as I’ve never ridden a 450 in Supercross before and I was slightly out of sync. As the first race went on I settled into a rhythm, but it was only an eight-lap moto so I only just got into the groove as the race wrapped up.

“I rode pretty consistently all night and just kept getting smoother as the races went on, particularly in the last race – I really got a flow going with the new bike.

“I love the RM-Z450 for Supercross; it’s great for the starts and it gave me a real mental boost to know that I’ve got that four-stroke power like most of the other guys.”

Burkhart said: “The bike is great and I put in a good, solid performance, so I’m 99% happy - apart from the points that were taken away from me which has made the difference between second place and fourth for both the round and the championship.

“The penalty doesn’t make sense to me… the track marker was missing and we all rode around the outside of the hay bale. I followed the other riders through there and wasn’t the only guy taking that line.

“It’s a bit disappointing to have second place taken from me, but it feels good to be running up there with the top guys and to know that I’m one of them now.”

Team Shift Motul Suzuki Team Manager Jay Foreman added: “This has been a great race meeting for Team Shift Motul Suzuki with Daryl’s overall win for round two of the Supercross Masters, but Luke’s penalty has soured things a little for us.

“We should have had a Suzuki one-two here this weekend and Luke should be sitting in second overall in the championship. Instead he’s been awarded fourth place for both so we’re naturally very disappointed.

“The Supercross Masters series takes a break now as we head into the Australian Motocross Championship in Perth next Sunday. We’ve done some intensive motocross testing in New Zealand, the bikes are well prepared and obviously both Daryl and Luke are riding very well. The whole team is focussed on retaining the number one plate in motocross and I think we’re well positioned for some strong results next week.”

Race Result: 1 Daryl Hurley 8, 2 Timmy Weigand 7, 3 Danny Ham 6, 4 Luke Burkhart 5, 5 Cheyne Boyd 4, 6 Craig Anderson 3, 7 Daniel Reardon 2, 8 Shane Metcalfe 1

Championship points (after 2 rounds): 1 Timmy Weigand 14, 2 Cheyne Boyd 10, 3 Daniel Reardon 10, 4 Luke Burkhart 9, 5 Daryl Hurley 8, 6 Craig Anderson 8, 7 Danny Ham 6, 8 Cody Cooper 3, 9 Daniel McCoy 2, 10 Shane Metcalfe 2.

Ernesto Fonseca…three weeks into the next chapter of life

Supercross Monday 27 March 2006

The following is from Next Level Sports Management’s Tony Gardea:

I know it’s been some time since we’ve released information on Ernesto’s recovery, so I thought I’d drop a quick note so we can all continue to keep him in our thoughts and prayers!

The overflow of support has really been impressive and it’s been overwhelming to watch how our sport can come together for one of its own. We’ve received thousands of letters and warm thoughts from all over the world (and Ernesto has us read them all to him!) and told him that several race wins were dedicated to him, including those of RC and Roger Lee Hayden at Daytona and the recent victory in Paris by world class bicyclist Floyd Landis. This support, as well as the many who have sent along their well wishes through internet posts and word of mouth, has been relayed to Ernesto over the past few weeks.

Tomorrow (Tues.) will mark three weeks since his injury and he continues his recovery at the hospital in Riverside. He has been slow to regain full strength in his lungs, but his overall health has been good and the doctors continue to remind him that his road to recovery will be long (especially when Ernesto asks “when do I get to leave?”) and to look for results over time, and not day-to-day. The movement in his arms and hands continues to show improvement and all other progress with his legs will begin with rehabilitation, time and prayers.

He has the heart and determination to fight this thing and also has an excellent support group that begins with his wife, Carolina, and parents, who have been at his side the entire time. He also wanted to send along his gratitude to the many who have shown their support through these tough times. He will be leaning on that support group as he begins his road to recovery.

P.S. Several programs are being planned to generate support for Ernesto, including “Fonseca 10″ wristbands, “collector’s edition” wallpapers for both desktop and mobile phones, t-shirts, stickers and other support-related items. Announcements will be released in the coming weeks to inform everyone on just how they can get behind Ernesto in his fight!

Regards,

Tony Gardea

MotoXXX…they have been caught suntanning in Florida

Supercross Monday 27 March 2006

A Sunny Diversion
Moto XXX Spends a Week in Florida

With half of the riders based on the east coast and two consecutive rounds in
the Sunshine State, Team Unbound Energy/Moto XXX decided to spend the week
between the Daytona and Orlando rounds of the Supercross series in Florida. In
addition to a change of scenery for most of the personnel, the extended layover
has given the squad a chance to test and train in a different environment than
they’re used to. All in all, it’s been a refreshing break that has everyone
charged up about the next race.

Florida resident Timmy Ferry has played host/tour guide this week and luckily
for everyone involved, he’s been in a good mood. That’s largely due to the fact
that he turned in another top-ten ride last weekend. After gating in the back
half of the pack, “Red Dog” passed several riders, including a couple of
factory guys, and finished the race in 8th. Although his progress has been very
evident, Timmy still wants more and expects his results to keep improving.

Two weeks ago, Josh Summey had a nasty get-off that ended in a trip to the local
emergency room. He was cleared to race, but couldn’t get back to the stadium in
time for his LCQ. Fortunately, he harnessed that disappointment and found even
more determination. He finished 7th in the “Lites” division at Daytona and
showed enough speed to threaten for a top-five spot this weekend. Said Team
Manager Allan Brown, “There’s no question that Josh is fast enough. We just
have to get the starts and stay away from the bad luck he’s had at half the
races this year.” Even with a couple of mishaps, Summey resides inside the top
20 in East Region points.

Less than two weeks after eating a giant dirt sandwich, Kyle Lewis appears ready
to defy the odds once again. The amount of facial trauma he suffered had doctors
thinking that he wouldn’t be able to ride again for weeks, but “Lucky’s” been
discrediting conventional wisdom for years. He’s made a quick recovery and
hopes to ride Orlando this weekend. Status: Probable.

Zach Osborne is Red Bull KTM’s shining Daytona star

Supercross Monday 13 March 2006

I really feel for Larry Brooks, he has to deal with the toughest mini dad ever to walk the planet in Tony Alessi as he watches over both of his sons (Mike and Jeff Alessi) on this years Red Bull KTM team and he also has to deal with one of the biggest waste of talent riders ever to race SX, Josh Hansen.

Is Josh Hansen going to burn out and fade away before he turns 22? I’d say it has already happened, the proof is in the pudding they say and his recent appearance on Carey Hart’s TV show “Inked” is proof enough…Hansen figures “he came from Nuthin”…how that is when you dad is a former National Champion and Team Honda star Donny Hansen and you have had factory bikes since you were a 9 year old I will never know…

Under clear skies, young Zach Osborne joined the Red Bull KTM Supercross riders Josh Hansen and Jay Marmont for his first supercross event and won his qualifying heat race.

In the first Lites heat race, Josh Hansen and Zach Osborne lined up at the gate and both riders had a midpack start where they finished 6th and 9th, moving them into the main. Jay Marmont was in the second heat race and also had a midpack start and finished the 6-lap race in 8th.

The excitement grew as the Supercross Lites class lined up in the gates and when the gate dropped it was Jay Marmont in third. Josh Hansen was midpack and Zach Osborne crashed off the first corner berm only to jump up quickly and roar down the track, eager to pick off other riders. Osborne showed a lot of heart and determination as he went from last to 14th where he finished his night. Josh Hansen was forced to pull off the track because of a nagging back injury and Jay Marmont completed his night in 9th.

MotoXXX…The original Privateer Racers

Supercross Wednesday 8 March 2006

Still Kicking
Moto XXX Goes Down, But Not Out in Indianapolis

By definition, no privateer’s season is complete without generous amounts of bad luck. As everyone at Unbound Energy/Moto XXX knows, teams are not exempt from it either. The tenth year squad definitely hit a rough patch in Indianapolis last weekend, but all was definitely not lost.

Timmy Ferry’s performance was the highlight of the weekend. At one point in practice, he had the 7th fastest lap time and felt confident going into the evening program. Once the lights came on, “Red Dog” took an easy route to the main event by finishing second in his semi-final. In the Supercross main, he got a solid start and rounded the first turn inside the top ten. During the next 20 laps, he battled with multiple factory riders and continued to turn solid times. He finished the race in 9th, his second top-ten performance in 3 races, and now sits 13th in the AMA standings. With the series heading to Timmy’s home state of Florida for the next couple of weeks, he’s understandably upbeat and plans to move further up in the running order.

Unfortunately, not everything went so well. Kyle Lewis crashed after coming up short in a rhythm section during practice and was unable to continue. He suffered a facial fracture and looked a lot worse for wear when it was all said and done. Because of a potential risk to his vision in one eye, “Lucky” will sit out the Daytona Supercross and very possibly Orlando as well.

Josh Summey went into Indy with the momentum of his 11th place finish in Atlanta. He was riding well, but got involved in a collision during his heat race. He hit the ground hard and was advised by the Asterisk Mobile Medical staff to visit a local emergency room to be sure that no serious damage had occurred. Wisely, Josh did so and was cleared to race. Unfortunately, he came up just short in his attempt to get back to the track in time for the LCQ. The good news is that he’ll be ready to go Friday night in Daytona.

Finally, Juss Laansoo resumed his Supercross education in Indianapolis. Once again, he qualified into the night show and rode admirably from then on. With the foot injury behind him, Juss plans to use the remaining Supercross rounds as a learning experience while preparing for his assault on the 2006 Outdoor Nationals.
