Stefan Everts wins his third in four weeks

Hawkstone Park
5/3/2006

Rinaldi Yamaha rider Stefan Everts claimed his third victory in four weeks after winning both MX1 heats of the Hawkstone Park International in Shropshire, England.

The nine times World Champion dominated the first of two heats in bright and sunny but cold conditions. A packed crowd attended one of the more prestigious pre-season events of the winter calendar and the dark Hawkstone sand was in its usual rough and demanding state. The circuit is dwarfed by the large hill section that sees the riders climb a near-vertical 100m slope and the gradient caught out a number of top riders as the International once again boasted an array of Grand Prix stars.

For the third time since the motocross schedule began to crank into life during February, Everts beat the likes of the factory backed Honda team and the works Suzuki and KTM efforts, all housing his main rivals for the 2006 MX1 World Championship.

Everts escaped the clutches of fellow Belgian Kevin Strijbos in the opening sprint and was just as masterful in the second heat as he glided past Strijbos and his team-mate Steve Ramon. A mistake on the last lap gave Strijbos more impetus to close the gap but the race was already won.

A ‘hatrick’ could not be taken later in the afternoon as a rare fall in the ‘Grand Final’ (mixing the best finishers from the MX1 and MX2 classes) allowed Yamaha MX2 representative Billy Mackenzie to streak head on the YZ250F. Although he fronted the pack for the majority of the distance Mackenzie was slowed by backmarkers with just two laps to go and was caught by Strijbos and a charging Everts who plagued the Suzuki rider to the flag and was only a second behind over the finish line.

Contrary to reports stating that he would miss the pre-season race programme Cédric Melotte took to the line at Hawkstone. The Belgian is still recovering from an injured wrist, but was able to wrestle the YZ450FM over the sandy terrain for eigth and fifth positions. He picked up a DNF in the Final after a collision with another rider robbed him of his rear brake.

Bike it Dixon Yamaha’s Billy Mackenzie produced a good performance in his first race meeting of the season. The 21 year old slipped from second place to third in the first heat after suffering some arm-pump but confidently claimed the next heat by over twelve seconds from main British Championship rival Carl Nunn. Only a hold-up with backmarkers prevented the Scot from marking a historic triumph over the 450s in the ‘Grand Final’.

Stefan Everts:
“I will miss this place. It is the sixth year in a row I have come to Hawkstone. I’ve had some great moments here and unfortunately I never got the chance to ride in the Grand Prix. I think it is a great track with a lot of potential. I enjoyed the races today and it was difficult to make the lap of honour for the last time.”

Cédric Melotte:
“The result is not so bad because I wasn’t expecting to finish all three races. In the last heat I hit someone else’s wheel and the brake pedal bent under the footpeg so I could not continue. I am quite satisfied. I could not push too hard because my wrist was giving me trouble but I am confident and now need to go step by step to reach my best level. We are still working on the bike because I missed a lot of testing time.”

Billy Mackenzie:
“I feel like I have an overall win because I managed to produce that good last race. That heat was awesome; it was such a buzz to be leading those guys. With two laps to go I was thinking about what celebration I could do over the finish line, but it never comes that easy when you are racing against the best! Just to be in front of them for that length of time felt good. I also set the fastest lap. This meeting will keep me going for a few weeks. The first race was pretty muddy and I got some arm-pump, but it was the first one of the year so that was expected. I got a top three though and I know I need to work on my consistency so I am pleased. We tweaked the bike and got rid of some of the niggly problems we would have had at Lyng for the British Championship next week.”

Nunn pumped after Hawkstone Park victory
(06.03.2006)
—————————————-

The reigning British Champion looked fit, fast and assured over the rough English sand, under some winter sunshine in low temperatures. A large crowd travelled to the renowned pre-season meeting in Shropshire, just west of the city of Birmingham.

Nunn blasted away from main rival Billy Mackenzieand young Kawasakirider Tommy Searle to win the first moto of 25 minutes and 2 laps and then took a steady 2nd position later in the day to confirm the overall victory. In the last race of the meeting, the ‘Grand Final’ between the best classified riders of MX1 and MX2, Nunn was holding a top six position before he crashed on the long, steep hill section and struggled to restart his machine. He did however manage to complete the race and was ranked 6th from the MX2 group.

Champ KTM team-mate Marc de Reuver was making his first tentative competitive outing of the year but was unable to place within the top ten.

The MX1 team of Mickael Pichon and Sebastien Tortelli were also in attendance. Pichon, who was ill during the week, was easing his way into competition and continuing to work on the set-up of the SX450F. The Frenchman scored a brace of 4th positions for 3rd place overall and was also 4th in the ‘Grand Final’. Tortelli had a crash-filled introduction to the Hawkstone sand with three falls in the first moto. The former World Champion’s best ranking was a 7th in the ‘Grand Final’.

Carl Nunn:

“This was good because I felt that my pace was there last week in Francebut my results did not really show it. I think a lot of people looked at that as if I hadn’t been working this winter when the complete opposite is the real truth. I am way ahead of my condition and readiness of last year; all I can do is build on this. My training is going great. I have lost a bit of weight to be lighter for the starts and it is working well. We are working on the starts as a team and it has been really effective, like we saw today. KTM have worked hard on the 250 and I feel really comfortable on the bike.”

Mickael Pichon:

“Today was not so bad because I had been sick after Pernes for three days. I am in fact quite happy with the result because the track was not that easy! My motos were consistent, no DNFs or big mistakes. I don’t feel that I am at 100% yet physically when it comes to my riding; so I am satisfied. The bike was running well. I want to keep on working because we only have another three weeks before Zolder.”

Sebastien Tortelli:

“There was some good and some bad today. We finished the three motos which was a positive thing but I was not that used to the nasty conditions and had a bad first race with a lot of crashes. I had been training in sand but this was much deeper! I was very happy with the bike and we have made a big step forward compared to the two last races. Now we just need to train and focus on the Championship.”

The ninth round of the AMA Supercross series moved to Indianapolis, IN this past weekend and saw Josh Hansen finish in the top 10.

Heat one of the Supercross Lites class hosted Josh Hansen and the young Red Bull KTM Rider had a mid-pack start and finished fourth, advancing him to the main. Jay Marmot was in heat two and ran into back luck as the Australian had a mid-pack start and finished in tenth position, moving him to the Last Chance Qualifier where he ended up crashing and did not move up to the main event.

Josh Hansen had a positive attitude going into the main, and as he got off the start, he came around the corner mid-pack and picked riders off, moving into sixth position and stayed there to complete his night.

Enduro 2 : Merriman enjoys winning Enduro 2 debut
Round: 1 - Spanish GP
Circuit: Guadalajara
Date: 2 April 2005

UFO Corse Yamaha rider Stefan Merriman claimed two day wins in the Enduro 2
class at the opening round of the FIM World Enduro Championship in
Guadalajara, Spain to take an early lead in the highly competitive E2 class.
Finishing ahead of Frenchman Fabien Planet on day one and Finn Samuli Aro on
day two, Merriman now heads the E2 class of the nine-round championship
aboard his WR450F.

With Planet claiming the runner-up position on day one it was Aro who
finished third with neither rider able to mount a serious challenge to the
Australian. With Merriman again comfortably out front in the E2 class on day
two, Aro managed to get the closest to the reigning E1 world champion but
was again unable to challenge for the day win. Finishing third on day two
was Swede Anders Eriksson aboard his Husqvarna.

Stefan Merriman (UFO Corse Yamaha) Day 1: First, Day 2: First

“It’s always good to start the new season with a win and all things
considered I’m really happy with the way things went here in Spain. Day one
was pretty tough, but it was like that for everyone. The weather changed a
lot and the course also changed very fast, which meant that some of the
riders at the rear of the class entry were able to go fast. I was a little
nervous before the race because I didn’t have great results in the opening
rounds of the Italian championship but everything has worked out really
well.

“The team is using Ohlins suspension for the first time this season and like
all changes it takes some time to get used to the way the bike works. We’ve
been working really hard and the bike is really good. “I crashed once on the
extreme test on day two, which I was pretty angry with myself for because it
was a stupid mistake, but that was the only real mistake. I hurt my finger,
which made it hard to use the clutch. Thankfully that was the worst thing
that happened to me all weekend and everything else went good.”

David Fretigne (Yamaha France) Day 1: 10th, Day 2: Ninth

“It was a really difficult race for me because since the Dakar Ralley I have
only spent a little bit of time on an enduro bike. I am competing for fun. I
am really surprised at the level of the riders because it is very close
between so many competitors. It was my first time riding an extreme special
test but I really enjoyed it. They are very interesting and challenging for
the riders.
“I had a crash on the first special test on day two which didn’t help my
result. The rest of the race went ok but it is difficult for me to return to
enduro after racing in the Dakar.”

Enduro 1 : Difficult start of season for Oblucki
Round: 1 - Spanish GP
Circuit: Guadalajara
Date: 2 April 2005

UFO Corse Yamaha team rider Bartosz Oblucki did not get the season start he
was hoping for, just missing the podium on dat one and finishing ninth on
day 2. Local favourite Ivan Cervantes (KTM) claimed a double class win after
producing consistently quick special test times all weekend despite not
known for his mud riding skills. Behind Cervantes on day one Frenchman Marc
Germain defended Yamaha’s honor well by claiming a well deserved runner-up
spot finishing ahead of Britain’s Paul Edmondson making an all four-stroke
podium. On day two Cervantes was followed home by Swede Richard Larsson with
Finn Petteri Silvan finishing third.

Bartosz Oblucki (UFO Corse Yamaha) Day 1:Fourth, Day 2: Ninth
“Day one wasn’t so bad for me because I finished fourth, only one second
behind third place. I lost 11 seconds on the final special test of the day
because I crashed on the road, which was a big crash and I was lucky not to
hurt myself.

“Day two was really bad but I don’t know the reason why. I felt bad and my
times in the special test were also bad. I couldn’t find a good rhythm. I
onlky had two tests where my times were good. Then I crashed and things just
didn’t go so well. All in all it was a pretty disappointing weekend for me.”

JAMES STEWART AGAIN FEATURED IN SPORTS ILLUSTRATED MAGAZINE

Supercross Friday 8 April 2005

The April 11 issue of Sports Illustrated magazine features a full page article about James Stewart. Penned by Yi-Wyn Yen, this is the second story about Bubba to appear in the venerable sports magazine in recent months, proving how the mainstream media is providing more coverage of motorcycle racing.

The well written story highlights Bubbas rise through the ranks of AMA racing including his dominating victory last weekend at the Dallas Supercross his first in the 250 class. The story also predicts how Bubba is destined to change the face of Supercross.

A sidebar to the story sizes up Bubbas primary competition including Ricky Carmichael, Chad Reed, Kevin Windham, Jeremy McGrath and Travis Pastrana. The issue is on newsstands now.

HANSEN AND GRANT PENALIZED

Supercross Friday 8 April 2005

PICKERINGTON, Ohio (April 8, 2005) — AMA Pro Racing has announced that Josh Hansen and Josh Grant have been penalized for actions at round 12 of the THQ AMA Supercross Series at Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas on April 2.

In announcing the penalties, AMA Pro Racing SX/MX Series Manager Steve Whitelock stated Hansen has been fined $5000 and Grant has been fined $2000. Additionally, both riders have been placed on probation for the remainder of the 2005 racing season and further inappropriate behavior could result in a suspension of their AMA professional racing licenses.

At Dallas, both riders engaged in actions that are detrimental to the sport of motorcycle racing, said Whitelock in announcing the penalties. An on-track incident spilled over to additional altercations off of the track and that is completely unacceptable.

Both riders were made aware of their penalties Friday morning in a meeting at the Pontiac Supercross.

STEWART LOOKS TO BE RIDER TO BEAT AT PONTIAC SUPERCROSS

Supercross Tuesday 5 April 2005

AMA 125 East Supercross title also to be decided

PICKERINGTON, Ohio (April 5, 2005) — After dominating in his first THQ AMA Supercross Series win last weekend in Dallas, Kawasakis James Bubba Stewart is considered by many the favorite to win this weekends race on Saturday, April 9, at the Silverdome in the Detroit suburb of Pontiac, Mich. Attention will also shine brightly on the series finale of the AMA 125 East Supercross Series.

Three riders still have a shot at the 125 East title with Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasakis Grant Langston leading Red Bull KTMs Josh Hansen by seven points. Suzukis young gun Davi Millsaps is in contention for the title as well, just 10 points behind Langston.

Langston is one of the most versatile riders in AMA racing. The South African native already has a 125 Motocross World Championship, an AMA 125 Motocross Championship and an AMA Supermoto Unlimited title to his credit. Hes now looking to add an AMA 125 Supercross title to his collection. He went a long way in securing the title by winning last weekend at Texas Stadium.

The Championship was close so I definitely wanted and needed the win in Dallas, Langston said. The win gives me a little bit of a margin. Ill sleep a little better this week, but I know I still have to put in a good performance at Pontiac. Being with the new team and being able to practice with all of Kawasakis riders really helped motivate me this year.

Josh Hansen and Davi Millsaps now need a little luck on their side to have a chance to catch Langston for the 125 East Championship. If Hansen can pull it off he will join his dad Donnie Hansen as the first father and son combo to win AMA Supercross titles. Millsaps is in his first full season of Supercross and the 17-year-old from Georgia said hes been happy with his performance this season. Ill go into Pontiac and ride my own race, he said. Ive had a successful season regardless of what happens there.

While the 125 East title will be decided in Pontiac, four rounds still remain in the premier class. Three-time AMA Supercross Champion Ricky Carmichael comes into the race with a 31-point lead over defending champ and two-time Pontiac Supercross winner Chad Reed. Carmichael is hoping to get his first win at Pontiac since 2001 and give Suzuki its first victory at the event since 1983, but he remains focused on the big prize of his fourth AMA Supercross title.

Its been frustrating to dominate the first half of the season and not be able to do it now, Carmichael admitted. With the points lead I have to watch my back and not put myself in a position to have something bad happen. I want to run with Bubba and get some more wins, but Im sort of in a tough position right now in my run for the title.

Reeds winning streak came to an end with a crash at Dallas last week. He managed to regroup and put his Yamaha on the podium with a third, but he lost ground in his charge to catch Carmichael in the standings. At Dallas I came up on a lapped rider and hit his back tire, he said. It was unfortunate, but those things happen. Now I have to get ready for Pontiac.

With Carmichael and Reed still in a championship battle the emergence of Bubba Stewart has opened a new chapter in the 2005 AMA Supercross season. Stewart became the first new winner of the series in over two years. And the buildup of the expectations for the all-time winningest 125 rider put intense pressure on him to win.
Everybody has been expecting a lot from me and Im just so happy it (winning a 250 main) finally happened, Stewart said. It took me three races to get my first win. For some reason I knew I was going to do it in Dallas. I felt really strong last weekend. Ive got one under my belt. The pressure is off now and its time to race.

Stewart sat out most of the first half of the season with a broken arm so hes not in the championship hunt. He admits that enables him to focus solely on winning, not needing to worry about the points chase.

Im looking forward to Pontiac, he said. I won the 125 race there last year and Id like to go there and win the big race.

Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster outlets, all participating Michigan motorcycle dealers, at the Silverdome Box Office, or charge by phone at 248-645-6666. The Pontiac Supercross will air nationally on ESPN2 on Sunday, April 10 starting at 5:00 p.m. EST.

REED HOPES TO BECOME FIRST TO WIN THREE STRAIGHT DALLAS SUPERCROSS RACES

Supercross Monday 28 March 2005

PICKERINGTON, Ohio (March 28, 2005) — Yamahas Chad Reed heads into the upcoming Dallas Supercross hoping to become the first rider in series history to win the Texas Stadium event three straight times. The race, held in Irving, Texas, on April 2, is round 12 of the 16-race THQ AMA Supercross Series.

Reed is on a two-race winning streak coming into this Saturdays race and he hopes to keep his momentum going. In 2003 Reed went on a six-race romp and pushed Ricky Carmichael all the way to the final race in the series championship chase. Reed is coming off what he described as one of the strangest victories of his career two weeks ago in Orlando.

To win and barely break a sweat was weird, said Reed who rode to his third win of the year in Orlando. I got a bit fortunate with the mistakes made by the other riders. Every point counts in trying to catch Ricky. I believe I still have a shot at the title. We still have a lot of racing to do and anything can happen.

Reed took the victory in Orlando after Kawasakis James Stewart and Suzukis Ricky Carmichael both crashed while leading. The win moved Reed past the legendary Jeff Ward to fifth on the all-time AMA Supercross wins list with 21-career victories.

Carmichael still holds a 29-point lead in the series with five rounds remaining, but hes not happy with losing two straight.

My crash in Orlando was a crazy mistake that I just can not do, said the three-time AMA Supercross champ. Ive been frustrated the last couple of races, but I just have to come back and keep it on two wheels. It seems that Chad comes on strong in the second half of the season and Ive got to step up and stop his momentum. People tell me I can win the championship by settling for second, but I dont want to just lay down. Its a bad habit to get into. Im here to win and I know I can do it.

Carmichael will attempt to give Suzuki a first at Texas Stadium. He could become the only Suzuki rider to ever earn victory in the Dallas Supercross, which began in 1975.

The race is a rematch of sorts between Carmichael and Reed. The two had perhaps the best AMA Supercross race of the 2003 season at Texas Stadium. The riders swapped for the lead close to a dozen times during the 20-lap final. Reed finally opened up a small gap in the latter stages of the race.

Stepping into the mix is Kawasakis young gun James Stewart. Stewart comes to Texas Stadium with the confidence that he can run, and even better the pace of Reed and Carmichael. He beat Carmichael in a qualifying race in Orlando and built a good lead in the final before crashing.

Overall, Im happy coming out of Orlando healthy, said Stewart who returned to the circuit since breaking his arm in January. Im just trying to get some racing under my belt. Im going into Dallas with confidence. My arm feels 100 percent. Hopefully in Dallas, Chad, Ricky and I can battle together the entire race.

The AMA 125 East Supercross race enters the second-to-last round in Texas Stadium. In one of the most hotly contested championships in the history of the series Monster Energy Drink/Pro Circuit Kawasakis Grant Langston is tied with Red Bull KTMs Josh Hansen atop the standings. Makita Suzukis Davi Millsaps won the last round in Orlando and moved to within seven points of the leading duo.

The championship is going down to the final race, said Hansen, son of 1982 AMA Supercross champ Donnie Hansen. With just two races to go everything is on the line and it should make for really good racing.

Langston agrees and adds that theres very little room for strategy now. Its gotten to the point that its very simple. You have to win.

Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster outlets, all participating Yamaha dealers, at the Texas Stadium Box Office, or charge by phone at 214-373-8000 or 972-647-5700. Texas Stadium also features a special Family Section. When ordering tickets through Ticketmaster, request Family Section for an alcohol-free family atmosphere.

The Dallas Supercross will air nationally on ESPN2 on Sunday, April 3 starting at 12:30 p.m. EST.
