ORLANDO THQ AMA SUPERCROSS SERIES FRIDAY PRACTICE CANCELLED

Supercross Thursday 17 March 2005

PICKERINGTON, Ohio (March 17, 2005) — AMA Pro Racing and Clear Channel Motorsports have announced that Friday practice for this weekend‚Äôs round of the THQ AMA Supercross Series in Orlando has been cancelled due to inclement weather.
Steady rains have prevented crews from being able to load-in the dirt at the Citrus Bowl resulting in a delay in track construction.

While Saturday’s schedule, including practice and qualifying heats, is expected to run as planned, severe weather could impact the event schedule further. Additional information will be issued if necessary.

THQ AMA Supercross Series returns to Citrus Bowl

PICKERINGTON, Ohio (March 15, 2005) — The THQ AMA Supercross Series returns to Orlando‚Äôs Citrus Bowl on Saturday, March 19, for round 11 of the 16-race series. It marks the first AMA Supercross race in the stadium since 1997. Highlighting the return to Orlando is the return to competition of local hero James ‚ÄúBubba‚Äù Stewart from nearby Haines City, Fla.

Stewart, the all-time winningest rider in AMA 125 Supercross history, crashed at the second round of the series in Phoenix in January and broke his arm. The Kawasaki ace has been preparing for several weeks and racing fans across the country are abuzz about seeing the 19-year-old racing phenom back in action.

The final six rounds of the series promise to be attention grabbing. In addition to Stewart’s return Yamaha’s Chad Reed earned a well-deserved victory at Daytona International Speedway last weekend over series leader and four-time Daytona Supercross winner Ricky Carmichael. Reed led from start to finish and Carmichael crashed chasing him.

In spite of the crash Carmichael remounted his Makita Suzuki and finished second to preserve a 32-point lead in the series standings. Carmichael said his loss at Daytona meant the hard working rider would train even harder to maintain his series lead and to earn his fourth AMA Supercross title.
“It’s not easy to win these days with so many competitive riders in the series,” said Carmichael, who won the AMA 125 East Supercross race in Orlando eight years ago as a rookie. “I’ll go back and step up my program and concentrate on being the best rider I can be in order to win this championship.”

Indiana’s Mike LaRocco is the only past winner of the Orlando Supercross slated to start Saturday. The rider known to race fans as “The Rock” won Orlando in 1992 and 1993 and is still going strong in the series at 34. He’s coming off a third-place finish last weekend in Daytona Beach and is in a heated battle with Amsoil Chaparral Honda teammate Kevin Windham for third in the series standings.

The AMA 125 East Series went completely topsy-turvy last weekend in Daytona. Three of the top series riders, Grant Langston, Davi Millsaps and Matt Walker, suffered crashes and lost ground in the series chase. The big winner at Daytona was Red Bull KTM rider Josh Hansen. Hansen, son of 1982 AMA Supercross champ Donnie Hansen, earned the win and the series lead. Langston, of Team Monster/Pro Circuit Kawasaki is still solidly in the series, just two-points behind Hansen.

Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster outlets, all participating Yamaha dealers, at the TD Waterhouse Centre Box Office, or charge by phone at 407-839-3900. The Citrus Bowl also features a special Family Section. When ordering tickets through Ticketmaster, request Family Section for an alcohol-free family atmosphere.

Both the 125 East and main AMA Supercross final from Orlando will be nationally televised on Sunday, March 27 on ESPN2 starting at Noon EST.

Hansen is the new points leader by two, 80 - 78, over Grant Langston. Langston finished 15th, and Davi Millsaps 18th. New names in the top ten include Chad Johnson (fourth) and Donnie McGourty (eighth).

CARMICHAEL SEEKING DAYTONA SUPERCROSS RECORD

Supercross Tuesday 8 March 2005

Ricky Carmichael comes to the 2005 Daytona Supercross by Honda a man on a mission. On Friday night March 11, the 25-year-old Floridian will attempt to become the first rider to win five times at the historic AMA Supercross event.

Carmichael is experiencing his best season ever in the AMA Supercross Series. The Makita Suzuki rider has won seven of the nine rounds and earned his 40th-career AMA Supercross victory last weekend in St. Louis. Carmichael has built a 35-point lead over defending series champ and Daytona winner Chad Reed. Daytona is the one race that Carmichael always circles on his calendar.

“I love Daytona, I think everybody knows that,” said the four-time Daytona Supercross winner. “I’ve done well there and I think only good things can happen there. I look forward to it. When I go to Daytona I have a special feeling. I’m just really confident going there and I definitely feel I can win. Let’s just say that there’s not too much pressure on me when I go there.”

If Carmichael wins the 35th running of the race he will pass former Honda great Jeff Stanton as the all-time wins leader of the race. Stanton won at Daytona four years in a row from 1989 to 1992. Stanton, who helped coach Carmichael in the past, is philosophical about his record being broken.

“Supercross, like everything else, is a big circle of life,” said Stanton, a Motorcycle Hall of Famer. “Riders like Bob Hannah and Rick Johnson were the stars there before me, I had my time and now it’s time for a new generation of riders to have their time in the sun. Ricky’s a great champion and if the Daytona record is going to be broken I can’t think of a rider who deserves it more.”

Daytona is the oldest supercross race in the AMA series. It began on the back section of the track in 1971, which pre-dates the actual formation of the AMA Supercross Series. This race will mark the second year in a row that the race is being held on Friday night, a very popular move with fans. Additional lighting has been brought in to benefit both the riders and spectators.

While Carmichael is favored to win this year’s race, Yamaha’s Chad Reed is hoping to start a winning streak of his own at Daytona. He says there will be a few changes to his Yamaha for Daytona – the longest and most grueling race on the AMA Supercross circuit – but nothing drastic.

“Even though it’s a lot longer track, I think Daytona has become more like a typical supercross as far as the track layout is concerned,” said Reed, who also won the 125 East race at Daytona in 2002. “Ricky is tough there no doubt, but I think I’m prepared for the race.”

Interestingly, the Gary Bailey-designed circuit will be different than past Daytona layouts. Constructed within Daytona’s famous tri-oval, this year’s track has been shortened and will feature a completely new starting gate area. Lap times should be shorter and fans seated in the main grandstand will have a better view of the racing action. However, one thing that has not changed is that a win at Daytona only comes to the fittest, most well prepared riders. The course is famous for its challenging obstacles and punishing track surface and that remains a hallmark of Daytona. Careers are made by winning at Daytona.

Other top riders at Daytona include Kevin Windham and Mike LaRocco. Both Honda-mounted riders are battling for third in the series point standings. Windham has twice finished runner up at the Daytona Supercross. He would like to finally break through to earn his first win there, but he knows many things have to go right to win the rugged race.

“I definitely want to be up there at Daytona,” said Windham. “It’s a tough field of riders and a tough environment. Daytona puts a mid-season twist on the Supercross season. In my 11 years of pro racing I’ve yet to see the track duplicated. That makes it hard to prepare for. We know what to expect going in, but it’s so difficult to say that you are truly prepared for Daytona. I feel like I’m getting healthy again and I’d love to inch up on Chad and Ricky with a good performance at Daytona.”

South African Grant Langston leads the AMA 125 East Supercross Series coming into Daytona. At Daytona the Team Monster/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider is going for his third straight series victory. Langston is happy he’s holding off the young guns of the 125 East Series.

“I always knew I’d be competitive,” said Langston, a former AMA 125 Motocross Champion. “I was a little nervous coming into this season because it seems every year some youngster comes in and steps it up. Daytona is going to be an important race. It’s one of those races where you always like to do well.”

Makita Suzuki’s Davi Millsaps, who won the opening round of the series in Indianapolis, is second in the 125 East standings seven points down to Langston. Red Bull KTM’s Josh Hansen is third in the series Hansen hopes to give KTM its first Daytona 125 win.

Beginning at 11 p.m. EST on Friday, March 11, SPEED Channel will carry three hours of same day coverage from the Daytona Supercross by Honda.

Justin Buckelew Heats Up in Hotlanta

Supercross Tuesday 1 March 2005

It’s no secret that the first half of the AMA THQ Supercross season brought its share of challenges to the Honda/Moto XXX team, but the Atlanta race brought the privateer heroes a few needed smiles.

For starters, the Atlanta round ended the first half of the series and gives the team the opportunity to make a fresh start. It isn’t just blind optimism either, because both Justin Buckelew and Kyle Lewis gave Moto XXX and its fans reasons to be hopeful for the rest of the season.

Without a doubt, Buckelew had his best performance of the year. Riding the 125 East division aboard a Honda CRF250R, he was looking to improve on the 13th-place finish he scored at Indianapolis. He got off to a good start by transferring straight out of his heat race and carried that confidence into the main event. It was there that he set the team’s standards higher than they had been to that point in the season. In a field stacked with established factory stars and highly touted young prospects, “J-Buck” held his own. When the checkers flew, he was 8th overall, the best privateer finish of the night in either class. His consistency in the opening two rounds of the east coast series is already paying off. Justin has moved into 7th in the series standings, also the highest among privateers.

Kyle Lewis’ spectacular Indianapolis crash wasn’t as exciting for him as the millions of people who saw it on ESPN2. The incident left him battered and severely bruised, yet thankful that he didn’t suffer any serious injuries. After deciding against racing in San Diego, he bravely returned to action in Atlanta. A pro’s pro, Lewis wouldn’t hit the track without giving it everything he has. Despite a lot of lingering pain, he transferred to the main event from his semi as if he never missed a beat. Then he rode safely in the main, finishing 14th and giving himself a nice starting point for the second half.

The “Lucky and Bucky” show will perform next in St. Louis on March 5th. There both riders will be looking to raise the bar for the team again and maintain its position at the top of the privateer heap.

Moto XXX is faithfully supported by American Honda, Akrapovic, O’neal, Honda Genuine Parts, Sidi, Tag Metals, West Coast Customs, Polisport Plastic, Pro Honda Oils & Chemicals, Pro-X, Utopia Optics, N-Style, Lucky 13, Ready Filter, VP Fuels, Braking, Motion Pro, Hinson, Metaltek, Ogio, Dunlop, Fat Wreck Chords, RK Chain, Excel Wheels, Vortex, ARC, Ti Lube, Carbon Fiber Works, SDG Seats, Engine Ice, PPG, Asterisk, Lockhart Phillips, V-Force.

REED BREATHES NEW LIFE INTO THQ AMA SUPERCROSS SERIES

Supercross Tuesday 22 February 2005

Just when it seemed nobody could stop Ricky Carmichael, who was enjoying a five race winning streak in the THQ AMA Supercross Series, defending champion Chad Reed took his first victory of the season last weekend in San Diego. This Saturday, February 26, the 22-year-old Australian is hoping to start a winning streak of his own as the series move into the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

Reed breathed new life into the championship run by moving his Yamaha past the Suzuki of series leader Ricky Carmichael on the final lap in San Diego. Reed is hoping to repeat what he did in the second half of 2003 when he closed out the year with six-straight wins. It’s going to take that kind of run for Reed to have a chance to catch three-time AMA Supercross champ Ricky Carmichael, the rider from Havana, Fla., who has sprinted to his best start ever, winning five of the seven rounds coming into the Georgia Dome. Despite losing to Reed last week Carmichael holds a commanding 29-point lead in the series over Reed.

The exciting last-lap pass and win last week in San Diego is certain to go down as one of the most memorable victories for Reed. He appeared moved in accepting the trophy on the podium.

“I’ve asked a lot of my team this year,” Reed said after winning San Diego. “They’ve risen to the occasion and this win is a credit to them. I never expected it would take so long get a win this year and hopefully this will be the first of many more this season.”

Reed’s victory last weekend was the 19th of his career and it tied him with Damon Bradshaw for sixth on the all-time AMA Supercross wins list.

Carmichael crashed trying to re-pass Reed in San Diego, but was able to remount his Makita Suzuki and still salvage second. While not thrilled with his performance Carmichael seemed to take his first loss in six races in stride.

“Chad rode a great race and I got beat plain and simple,” Carmichael admitted. “The loss will give me the incentive to go home and practice that much harder. Sometimes when you win so often you start to lose some motivation and this is the kind of thing that will keep me motivated to continue to improve.”

Carmichael will try to give Suzuki its first Atlanta Supercross win since 1983.

Veteran Mike LaRocco moved back into third in the standings over Amsoil Chaparral Honda teammate Kevin Windham after taking third last weekend. LaRocco is a former Atlanta Supercross winner.

The AMA 125 East Supercross Series will resume with round two in Atlanta. Georgia’s own Davi Millsaps leads the standings after winning the 125 East opener in Indianapolis on his factory Suzuki a few weeks ago. Millsaps, of Cairo, Ga., just turned 17 last week and one of the leading up-and-coming riders in the series. If Millsaps is to hang on to his series lead he will have to hold off former AMA Motocross Champion Grant Langston, who comes into Atlanta ranked second, and Josh Hansen, a second generation pro racer who is third in the series.

Matt Walker, of McDonough, Ga., is another home state hero in the 125 class. Walker comes into Atlanta ranked fifth.

The Atlanta Supercross will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2 starting at 5 pm EST on Sunday, Feb, 27.

Tickets for the event are available at the Georgia Dome Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets, all participating Yamaha dealers, or you can charge by phone at 404-249-6400.

SAN DIEGO SUPERCROSS PRACTICE CANCELED

Supercross Thursday 17 February 2005

PICKERINGTON, Ohio (Feb. 17, 2005) — AMA Pro Racing and Clear Channel Motorsports have announced that Friday practice for this weekend‚Äôs San Diego round of the THQ AMA Supercross Series has been cancelled due to impending weather. In making the announcement, AMA Pro Racing SX/MX Series Manager Steve Whitelock said the decision was made in the interest of protecting the integrity of the track. ‚ÄúIf we get serious rain on Friday and destroy the track during practice that will negatively impact Saturday‚Äôs program including both main events,‚Äù said Whitelock.

“We‚Äôve had our eye on the regional weather forecast all week and there‚Äôs a very strong possibility that we‚Äôll get hit with a storm as early as this evening. By taking this step now we can protect the track as long as possible and help ensure a good show for the fans on Saturday.‚Äù

Saturday’s schedule, including practice and qualifying heats, is expected to run as planned. Severe weather could impact the event schedule further. Additional information will be issued if necessary.
